Upon the German occupation of Hungary on 19.3.1944, Shabtai escaped to Budapest with the help of forged documents he had received from comrades in the movement. He engaged in a variety of underground activities: preparing forged documents, setting up bunkers and bringing comrades from country towns to Budapest. In July 1944 an article was published in a Budapest newspaper with Shabtai’s photo saying that he was engaged in the forgery of documents and that the police were looking for him. Shabtai lived in various bunkers and was in charge of providing supplies to their occupants. In December 1944 he moved to the “Glass House” on Vadász Street where he was liberated from.
Shabtai learned pharmacy at the Brno University. He made aliya in 1949 and enlisted in the IDF. He was discharged with the rank of captain. Shabtai married Frieda Azarovitz. He worked as a pharmacist and was the national pharmacy manager.
